Facts about Urine Infection: Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are 50 times more common in women. The conditions range from cystitis (a mild but disturbing inflammation that is limited to the bladder) to severe infections of the kidneys. 70% of all UTI's are usually caused by the bacteria E coli from the patient's own bowels. This test detects indirect signs of infection such as protein, nitrite and leukocytes not normally present in urine.
Why is this test important to me? The cause of most urine infections is bacteria that colonise around the urethra (urine tube), and then ascend into the rest of the urinary tract system. The condition ranges from cystitis to severe infections of the kidney.
